Sea Lice Aren’t Actually Lice - Here’s Why a Stinger Suit Helps

If you have ever stepped out of the ocean in tropical waters feeling itchy, irritated, or covered in a strange red rash, there is a good chance someone nearby blamed “sea lice.”

But here is the surprising part.

Sea lice are not actually lice at all.

In Australia, the term “sea lice” is commonly used to describe irritation caused by tiny marine organisms, including jellyfish larvae and microscopic stinging creatures that become trapped against the skin while swimming.

And yes — they can absolutely ruin a beach day.

What Are Sea Lice?

Despite the name, sea lice are not insects and they do not live on humans.

The irritation commonly referred to as sea lice is usually caused by microscopic jellyfish larvae or other tiny marine stingers suspended in the water. These organisms are almost impossible to see with the naked eye and can become trapped beneath loose fitting swimwear, causing itching, redness, burning, and irritation.

Sea lice are most commonly experienced in:

  • Tropical waters

  • Warm summer conditions

  • Calm, shallow water

  • Areas with jellyfish activity

  • During stinger season in North Queensland

Why Loose Swimwear Makes It Worse

One of the biggest problems with bikinis, boardshorts, rashies and loose swim shirts is that they allow tiny marine organisms to become trapped and move around against the skin.

As the fabric shifts, friction increases the chance of irritation and stings.

That is why properly fitted stinger suits are widely considered one of the best physical barriers available during stinger season.

How a Stinger Suit Helps Protect Against Sea Lice

A high quality stinger suit creates a smooth, close fitting barrier between your skin and the water.

At Salty Goods, our UPF50+ stinger suits are made using a high density 210gsm performance fabric designed for tropical Australian conditions.

Our suits feature:

  • Full coverage protection

  • Smooth synthetic fabric designed to reduce tentacle adherence

  • Lightweight breathable construction

  • Quick drying compression style fit

  • UPF50+ sun protection

  • Four way stretch comfort

Unlike heavy neoprene wetsuits, our stinger suits are designed specifically for hot climates like the Whitsundays, Mackay, Cairns and the broader North Queensland coastline.

Sea Lice vs Jellyfish Stings

While sea lice irritation is usually less severe than a box jellyfish sting or Irukandji syndrome, it can still cause significant discomfort.

The main difference is scale.

Sea lice are microscopic and often create widespread itchy irritation, while larger jellyfish stings usually leave more obvious whip like marks or severe pain.

Both, however, reinforce the importance of wearing proper protective swimwear during stinger season.

The Best Way to Reduce Your Risk

No stinger suit can guarantee complete protection, especially on exposed areas like the hands, feet and face.

However, a properly fitted stinger suit dramatically reduces exposed skin and remains one of the most effective ways to lower the risk of marine stings and sea lice irritation in tropical waters.

If you are swimming, snorkelling, boating or exploring the reef during stinger season, wearing a high quality stinger suit is one of the smartest pieces of gear you can pack.
